The Early Bird's Nest

Life with our family from a bird's eye point of view

Miss Daisy

Born June 2, 2004

Domestic Medium Hair – Tortoise Shell

Miss Daisy was the first kitten born, and she had a pretty rough start right from the beginning.  Bj knew right away that she would need special attention, due to the fact that her back leg muscles were obviously not as strong as they should be. And even though she was mostly all black at the time, there was no mistaking the tortie marks on her paws!  Yuppers, folks, Bj took one look at her and yelled out "we have a tortie"!!

When the kittens were old enough to open their eyes, however, Miss Daisy had developed an eye infection and needed special care.  Because she was so young, the vet's office suggested that we keep her eyes cleaned out with a warm and damp cloth, and if they didn't clear up within a couple of days, then we'd have to bring her in.  Mysti seemed to know that our little bandit girl needed extra help, and didn't mind at all when Bj came by to check on her.  Fortunately, within a couple of days, that problem went away.

Then just a few days later, when we checked on the kittens first thing in the morning, Bj noticed right away that Miss Daisy wasn't breathing properly.  She called the vet's office and had to take her in, and we all said a few prayers since we had been told over the phone that she might have a genetic heart problem, and "come prepared".  Yea, that was pretty scarey.  But the vet checked her over and discovered that she had developed pneumonia, and all she needed was an antibiotic and a few more prayers.

We nursed her through that ordeal, and needless to say, we all formed a very special bond with her.  The boys were getting around pretty good, but Miss Daisy was still having some problems with the muscles in her hind legs.  It didn't slow her down much, though!!  By the time she reached a month old, she was running around and playing with her brothers, and we knew our fiesty little tortie was going to make it, even if she did get tired out before they did.

Bj's youngest daughter took a liking to Miss Daisy, and we think it's because she's kind of like her mom and tends to be a little "mother hen".  Bj's grand daughter Katie is the same way, and by the time Miss Daisy was 8 weeks old, they asked if they could "adopt" her.  We weren't planning on keeping any of the kittens at the time, so we were only too happy to let Miss Daisy go to their home, knowing she would stay in the family.  It was still hard on us letting her go, and we were hoping they'd continue to call her "Bandit", a name we had been calling her for quite some time, but the most important thing is that she has a wonderful home, where she's safe, happy, and spoiled rotten!!  Plus we get to see her whenever we want to!!

She loves playing with Katie's doll furniture, and Katie doesn't mind sharing it with her at all.  But when she discovered the fish bowl, well, let's just say it has a cover on it now!  She was a little younger in the pictures above, and now she's moving on to bigger and better things, like "Hey!  Is someone gonna teach me how to use the email on this here thing, or not??"

She was taken to the vet's recently to get spayed, but she came through with flying colors, and is well on her way to a full and happy life with her new family. Who would have ever thought that bringing in a stray cat last April would bring us another beautiful Tortoise Shell, much like "Gramma Critter"?  We guess it just goes to show that our Father in Heaven really does know what's best, after all.
